This study investigates the risks and vulnerabilities affecting food supply and food security in the EU, including differences across Member States, sectors and stages of the EU food supply chain. It finds that the EU food supply chain faces a broad range of risks and sheds light on the factors that make it vulnerable to these risks. The analysis identifies key characteristics of risks, such as origin, time horizon, likelihood of occurrence, potential impact and exposure. 

The ROBUST project aims to advance our understanding of the interactions and dependencies between rural, peri-urban, and urban areas, and to identify and promote policies, governance models, and practices that foster mutually beneficial relations. The project attempts to provide a conceptual framework that examines rural-urban synergies informed by relational spatial theory and smart regional growth theory, and translates these concepts into policy and governance practice. The framework includes three key concepts: new localities, smart development, and network governance. The key concepts are analyzed with regard to their theoretical background, conceptual definitions, operationalization, and relevance to rural-urban connections.

Romania's National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) embodies an ambitious agenda of reforms and investment aimed at mitigating the socio economic effects of the COVID-19 crisis.

This report details Rome's resilience strategy since its selection in December 2013 as one of the inaugural 32 cities in the 100 Resilient Cities network. Marking the conclusion of Phase II of the 100RC program, the emphasis was on identifying resilience-enhancing avenues through a collective decision-making process. The derived Resilience Strategy consists of four pillars, with 16 goals and 58 actions, of which nine are highlighted as top priorities.

Its purpose is to guide, coordinate, and facilitate the implementation of smart solutions in three Lighthouse Cities, with the aim of streamlining and guiding these solutions. The project attempts to provide concrete, tangible strategies, approaches, tools, and techniques for addressing smart solution implementation, and thus for creating sustainable and innovative urban environments. It offers a comprehensive guide that synthesizes lessons learned from the implementation phase, state-of-the-art scientific literature, and in-depth interviews. The lessons learned are expected to give valuable insights for other cities looking to implement smart solutions.

The RUGGEDISED project focuses on creating Innovation Platforms for innovative cities, with the goal of fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing among stakeholders to drive urban innovation. The project attempts to produce a comprehensive report that provides insights, conclusions, and recommendations for establishing effective innovation platforms in cities, with a focus on multistakeholder collaboration, vision alignment, and the transition from vision to action.

In this deliverable analysis is performed of the effects from scaling the demonstrated solutions in the participating lighthouse cities, Glasgow, Rotterdam and Umeå. The aim is to assess energy system effects when the proposed technologies are scaled up in order to analyse benefits and potential negative effects and investment needs in other parts of the system as a result of the upscaling. The effects are expressed in terms of economic savings and emission reduction. The solutions are also analysed when replicated in the other Lighthouse cities in order to assess the impact of the solutions in cities with other prerequisites.

This deliverable from the SAFERS project details a service for rapid wildfire impact assessment and monitoring using satellite data and machine learning for mapping and severity analysis. It features a resilient containerized architecture for data handling and model implementation. The report also introduces a service for monitoring post-wildfire habitat recovery, utilizing Copernicus Sentinels imagery to track vegetation regrowth and provide insights into environmental recovery and planning.

The SAFEWAY project aims to enhance the resilience of inland transport infrastructure by designing and implementing holistic methods, strategies, tools, and technical interventions. It focuses on improving risk prediction, monitoring, and decision-making tools to anticipate, prevent, and prepare critical assets for damage impacts. It also focuses on incorporating IT solutions into emergency plans and real-time communication for response and recovery. It aspires to achieve a 20% improvement in mobility and a 20% reduction in infrastructure maintenance costs by integrating multidisciplinary and multi-sectorial business fields associated with transport infrastructure resilience.

The EU-funded SALSA project set out to examine a potentially important role of small farms – their contribution to food security. SALSA recognises the tremendous diversity of small farms and food systems in Europe and Africa, and pays particular attention to their vulnerability and resilience. Aiming to provide effective tools to guide decision-makers, SALSA uses a food systems perspective to go beyond production capacity and look at food security in terms food availability, access and control, utilisation, and stability

The SAURON project is a multidimensional, installation-specific situational awareness platform designed to help port operators anticipate and withstand potential cyber, physical, or combined threats to their freight and cargo business, as well as the safety of their employees, visitors, passengers, and citizens in the vicinity. The project aims to provide a holistic situation awareness concept as an integrated, scalable, and yet installation-specific solution for protecting EU ports and its surroundings. The project sets out to offer guidance to ports on how port security can be improved in response to the combined cyber and physical threat. It also makes policy recommendations for public authorities dealing with regulatory aspects of the fight against physical and cyber-attacks, as well as for maritime industry dealing with certification and skills. 

Education Development Trust (EDT) has been collaborating with UNESCO-IIEP as a thought leadership partner to consider how education leadership might be strengthened in crisis settings, as part of IIEP’s work on crisis-sensitive planning. This think-piece captures learnings from our dialogue to date, including insights shared during a webinar series hosted by IIEP during March 2022.
