In an era marked by rapid change, interconnected uncertainties, and evolving challenges, resilience has become an essential focus for policymakers and societies. As Europe faces multiple, overlapping crises—ranging from climate change and pandemics to economic disruptions and geopolitical tensions—there is a critical need to design policies that strengthen societal resilience against both known and unknown risks.

The international conference “Designing policies for a resilient Europe” brings together experts in societal, economic, and policy dimensions of resilience to discuss the need for innovative and adaptive strategies. Our panel of experts will explore the complexities of fostering resilience across various sectors, emphasising the importance of systems thinking, human capital and knowledge valorisation as well as proactive entrepreneurial policymaking.

The conference will be introduced by Matias Barberis (EFIS Centre and FUTURESILIENCE Coordinator) and moderated by Roberto Zoboli (University Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Italy and Advisory Board member of the FUTURESILIENCE project). It will have as speakers: Giliberto Capano (University of Bologna), presenting on the policy side of resilience, Francesco Nicolli (University of Ferrara), debating on the role of green economy in building resilience and finally, Valeria Rijana (International University of Catalunya), presenting the societal aspects of resilience and bringing her experience as coordinator of the Urban Resilience Lab in Barcelona.
